Top Online Schools for Business

A business degree is one of the most popular choices for online students.

Turn on the TV and you're likely to see advertisements for for-profit online institutions like Kaplan University and the University of Phoenix that highlight the schools' business programs. However, the truth is, for-profit schools like these aren't accredited by the Association to Advanced Collegiate Schools for Business (AACSB), which is considered the benchmark for quality when it comes to business education. Fortunately, many highly regarded and AACSB-accredited brick and mortar institutions have expanded their offerings to include online business programs.

The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC) is one such example. In 2011, UNC was ranked number seven among the best undergraduate business programs by U.S. News and World Report , and the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC was ranked 19th among the best graduate business schools in the nation. This top-notch school began offering its first online Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, modeled after its already successful full-time and executive on-campus MBA program, in 2011. A Business Essentials certificate is also available online through UNC and includes courses in business communication and operations, economics and finance, financial accounting and marketing.

Indian University-Bloomington (IU) is another reputable school that offers online programs for business. In 2011, U.S. New and World Report ranked the university's Kelley School of Business 23rd among the best graduate business schools in the nation. The same year, IU's undergraduate business programs was ranked 10th among the best in the country. The Kelley School offers many online programs for graduate students, including a variety of online MBAs and even online Master of Science (M.S.) programs in global supply chain management, strategic management and finance.

The University of Florida-Warrington (UF) is yet another highly ranked school that offers online programs for business. The Hough Graduate School of Business was ranked 47th among the best business schools of 2011 by U.S. News and World Report. In addition to a number of on-campus programs, UF offers an online MBA and an online M.S. in Management: Health Concentrations program. Hough was one of the first schools to offer a fully accredited online MBA program, and The Economist ranked the program as not just the best in the nation, but also the best in the world as of 2008. The online programs include a two-year option open to any undergraduate major and a one-year accelerated option open to undergraduate business majors only. Both options require two years of full-time professional work experience.

These are just a few of the top-ranked universities with accredited online programs for business. As the demand for online education continues to grow, more undergraduate and graduate business programs are likely to be offered online at colleges and universities across the nation.
