The opportunities for higher education in North Carolina are vast. The University of North Carolina system, now comprised of 17 campuses, was the first public university in the country and the only one to graduate students in the eighteenth century. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the oldest State University in the United States, and home to the North Carolina Tar Heels, who share athletic rivalries with other Tobacco Road schools like: Duke University (Blue Devils) in Durham, North Carolina State University (Wolfpack) in Raleigh, and Wake Forest University (Demon Deacons), located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The state is home to 50 private colleges and universities, as well as a system of 58 community colleges.
