What is an MBA?

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a master's, or graduate level, degree in business administration, which attracts people from a wide range of academic disciplines. The required coursework is designed to introduce students to various areas of business such as accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, operations management, etc. Students in MBA programs have the option of taking general business courses throughout the program or selecting an area of concentration which will allow them to focus a portion of their studies in a specific area. Popular specializations include: accounting, entrepreneurship, international business, management science, organizational behavior, project management, and real estate, among others.

Choosing an MBA program

First, make sure you do your homework. Find out if any entrance exams are required, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in the United States, or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), a standardized test for measuring aptitude to succeed academically in graduate business studies. To schedule a test, an appointment must be made at one of the designated test centers. Once you've finished your prep work and have a clear idea of your career path, it's time to decide what kind of graduate business program is best for you.

Most academic degree programs offer a variety of programs to meet the diverse needs of prospective students, MBA programs are no different. Among the various options, Executive MBA (EMBA) programs are designed for students possessing a high level of work experience, often 8-10 years or more. Individuals may choose from programs designed to be completed in two-years, as well as more accelerated, one-year programs, and include opportunities for both full-time and part-time students. Although, prospective students should be aware, part-time degrees can take three to six years to complete, as opposed to two for most full-time and EMBA programs.
